Cosby’s love of the theater started very early on. Being on stage, and the center of attention seemed to be something he was born for. Classmates remember him as a class clown who was always entertaining those around him. Not all fun and games, he joined the Navy, serving in the Marine Corps for four years as a Hospital Corpsman in Physical Therapy. An excellent athlete, he was awarded a track and field scholarship which allowed him to return to school to study physical education after his naval career had ended. His athletic prowess made him a site to behold on the football field, but it surprised no one that he stumbled on his comedic path. While tending bar, he realized that he had a knack for making people laugh.
His first attempt at stardom was stand-up comedy. He played his hand at and around Philadelphia working bars and night clubs, which led to his debut album. In 1965, he became the first African-American co-star on television. Creating controversy, there was fear that many would boycott the series. Four stations originally refused to air the series, but as it gained in popularity, no one could resist playing it. His acting career has earned him an Emmy Award. His true talents in writing and creating copy were demonstrated when in the 70s he hosted the Bill Cosby show and produced the Fat Albert Show.
Spanning over several decades, Bill Cosby has been a silent champion for children’s education trying to establish a better and more equitable arena in public schools.
