Quick facts about Ralph Lauren
Date of birth: October 14, 1939
Place of birth: the Bronx, New York, U.S.
Occupation: fashion designer
There is something about New York’s Bronx and millionaires. Jim Jones began his life there and now it turns out Ralph Lauren grew up in the Bronx too. Like virtually everyone we described so far, Ralph Lauren’s childhood was far from golden. The future icon of style and luxury grew up in a modest family of immigrants. In fact, his father was a house painter.
There were four children in the family and Ralph was the youngest. It has been mentioned that Ralph was heavily influenced by movies of 1940s and 1950s era. The movie theater was his escape from the real life, he kept on watching and dreaming. Later he would say: “I don’t design clothes, I design dreams”. Was that another reference to his childhood favorite pastime?
So how did it all started? First of all, while Ralph Lauren was from a modest family, he had an ambition. Being influenced by his childhood dreams, he wanted to be a millionaire. Now most of us want to be millionaires, but there is a difference between a vague weak desire and a desire so strong that it has transformed into a goal.
Ralph Lauren’s first job was a salesman for Brooks Brothers, but he eventually left to work as a salesman for a tie company. While working for the tie company, Ralph got an idea for a new tie design however the company has rejected it for not being commercially viable. However, 26 year old Lauren believed in his design so much that he left to open his own company. He turned rugs into ties and sold them in small shops in New York city.
Now that Ralph Lauren is one of the richest people in the world with net worth of $7.7 billion, one may only wonder what would have happened if the tie company accepted the design. Would we ever hear of Ralph Lauren?
