Aubrey Drake Graham was born in Canada; Toronto to be precise, on October 24th, 1986, but he hasn’t always been the rapper that we know him as today. It all started in high school when one of his classmates at Forrest Hills told about Drake to his father who was an agent. Here is Drake’s quote about that event:
There was a kid in my class whose father was an agent. His dad would say, ‘If there’s anyone in the class that makes you laugh, have them audition for me.’ After the audition he became my agent.”
Drake became a child star in the form of a young actor, and had actually starred in the teen drama originated in Canada called Degrassi: The Next Generation. It wasn’t later on, until 2006, that he started to branch out into rap music, and it was a decision that he doesn’t regret. Especially when you consider that his 2012 tour was estimated to have raked in over $40 million!
From an early point, he had the backing of other rap stars including Lil Wayne, Jay Z, and Kanye West, and it took less than three years for Drake to get a song on the Billboards Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart at a massively impressive number two with the song “Best I Ever Had”.
Back in 2010, Forbes had voted him as the highest earning newcomer for the year and he was said to have raked in $10 million. In 2011, there was a new record deal as well as a number of pretty cool endorsements. There was the advertising pact with Coca-Cola (Sprite) and Kodak, and then there was the Virgin America contract…
Of course, you can’t forget about the deal back last year in 2013 with Jordan. The rapper and actor announced to a crowd that he had teamed up with the maker of sneakers to create his very own line of footwear. It would seem that this guy was determined to have his fingers in as many pies as possible and thankfully, it seems to be working just fine. The thing with the trainer endorsement however, was that it happened to coincide quite nicely with the announcement that Kanye West was teaming up with brand Adidas, after leaving Nike; the owners of Jordan. Could it be that the announcement was well-timed as well as well-thought up?
When you consider the fact that Drake has practically the whole of Canada backing him, plus the very public relationship with Rihanna that caused all sorts of problems with Chris Brown in the weird celebrity love-triangle that kept him in the media, Drake has done very well for himself. He kept his promise to himself that he would make $25 million and, in fact, has far exceeded that. With more tours and albums on the way, and no doubt a whole host of new endorsement deals coming his way, who knows where he could stand next year…?
